Coal

This is a short overview. For the background — history, value over time and notable mines — see Coal →

Occurs in: Anticlines and Synclines, Coal Formation and Rank, Concealed Coalfields, Dykes and Sills, Sedimentary Beds and Seams →

A combustible sedimentary rock formed from ancient compressed plant matter, worked underground or by opencast methods. Burned historically for domestic heating, and from the 18th century onward as the dominant fuel for steam power, iron-smelting and, later, electricity generation.
