Overview
A small Ossett colliery worked from 1896 to 1917, owned by C. Newsome, Shaw's Linfit Lane Coal Company and finally the Northfield Colliery Company.
History
Northfield Colliery was a small pit at Ossett, west of Wakefield, worked from 1896 until it was abandoned in 1917. C. Newsome owned it in 1896 and Shaw's Linfit Lane Coal Company in 1899; by 1917 it belonged to the Northfield Colliery Company Limited, which also worked Longlands Colliery in Ossett from 1910 to 1923 and later owned Greatfield.
It was a relatively small undertaking: in 1908 it employed 61 men underground and 10 at the surface, with S. Broadbent as manager. Northfield is very likely the same site as the colliery recorded as Crownlands.
