A small Ossett colliery known locally as Westwood's Pit, sunk between 1913 and 1916 and worked in the Haigh Moor seams until September 1954.
History
Greatfield Colliery worked coal at Ossett, west of Wakefield, and was always known locally as Westwood's Pit. It was sunk between 1913 and 1916. In 1945 it belonged to the Northfield Colliery Company Ltd of Ossett, with A. W. Thompson as manager and no under-manager, and employed 49 men underground and 11 at the surface.
It passed to the National Coal Board at nationalisation in 1947. It worked the Top and Low Haigh Moor seams: parts of the Top Haigh Moor were abandoned in 1948 and of the Low Haigh Moor in 1950, and both seams were finally abandoned on 25 August 1954. The colliery closed in September 1954.
