Overview

A colliery between Lupset and Wakefield, counted among the Ossett pits, worked from 1869 to 1913 by Hargreaves, Naylor and Company and then John Naylor and Company of Pildacre.

History

Whinny Moor Colliery was counted among the Ossett pits, though it actually lay between Lupset and Wakefield. It was opened in 1869 by Hargreaves, Naylor and Company, who owned it until 1873. By 1896 it belonged to John Naylor and Company, who also owned Pildacre Colliery at Ossett, and it shared Pildacre's manager, S. Broadbent, with J. Hudson as under-manager. It was then a small pit, employing 37 men underground and 7 at the surface.

A plan of the shale workings at Snapethorpe and Whinnymoor is dated 1886. The colliery was abandoned in June 1913.
