Overview
A pair of collieries near Bargoed worked by Bevan and Pryce from the 1870s, South Wingfield abandoned in 1891 after a peak output of 85,000 tons in 1881, and North Wingfield, first listed as Mardy, abandoned in 1892.
History
Wingfield Colliery, near Bargoed, had two parts. The southern colliery was opened in about 1871 and listed until 1886 as Wingfield, owned in turn by Bevan and Pryce, the Wingfield Colliery Company and finally E. Beddoe. From 1887 to 1891 it was listed as South Wingfield. Its best year was 1881, when it produced 85,141 tons, and it was abandoned in 1891.
The northern colliery was listed from 1874 to 1881 as Mardy and from 1882 to 1892 as North Wingfield, under Bevan and Pryce. It produced 34,955 tons in 1889 and was abandoned in 1892. Its workings were in the Mynyddislwyn seam, recorded on a plan with Pont-y-garreg.
