Overview

Gutter Colliery was one of the many small levels feeding the Cyfarthfa Iron Works, Merthyr Tydfil, and was abandoned in March 1924.

History

Gutter is recorded only briefly in its own right: one of the many levels used to feed the Cyfarthfa Iron Works, abandoned in March 1924, the same closure date recorded for several other small Cyfarthfa-feeder levels in the same NMRS survey. A separate NMRS roundup of the 'Cyfarthfa Collieries' as a group names Gutter among some thirty pits and levels that fed the works under this umbrella, alongside Taskers, Pen Machine, Cornely Wain and others. That roundup adds that the group moved from purely supplying the ironworks to also exporting coal from 1866, and worked seams including the Upper- and Lower-Two-Feet-Nine, Twenty Inches, Bute, Gellideg, Upper Yard, Upper-Four-Feet, Six-Feet, Seven-Feet and Nine-Feet, with the Little Blue, Black Pins, Big Blue, Rosser, Big and Upper Black Pins ironstone veins also worked from the same group of pits. It records a run of named deaths across these mines between 1852 and 1866, including several boys as young as eight to twelve killed by roof falls or run over by trams underground, but none of the deaths in that list is attributed specifically to Gutter; they belong to the wider Cyfarthfa group and are not used here as Gutter's own record.
