Overview
One of the deeper collieries of north Northumberland, near Lowick, worked from 1854 and marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1866; Strutt and Allan and then Sanderson and Dunn owned it in the 1860s and 1870s.
History
Lickar Colliery lay near Lowick, about seven and a half miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Coal may have been mined in the area since the 18th century, but the main Lickar Colliery, the one the Ordnance Survey's surveyors recorded on the first edition map of 1866, was worked from 1854. It was one of the deeper coal mines in the north of Northumberland, and its coal probably went to local uses such as a lime kiln nearby and the surrounding villages.
Strutt and Allan owned the colliery in the 1860s, and it returned coal in the Mineral Statistics of 1860 and 1865. Sanderson and Dunn held it in the 1870s. When it closed is not recorded.
