Mines in Northumberland
Northumberland's Allen valleys were, by the early 19th century, the most important lead-mining district in Britain, dominated by the Blackett-Beaumont family, whose flagship mine at Allenheads was for a time the single most productive lead mine in the North Pennines. The remote, high moorland setting meant mining communities here were often self-contained villages built entirely around one company.
