Overview

History
Wingfield Manor Colliery at Oakerthorpe, in South Wingfield parish near Alfreton, opened in 1908. It was worked by the Wingfield Manor Colliery Company of Alfreton, whose directors in 1923 were the Jacksons of Clay Cross Hall and J. Steen of Clay Cross. In 1923 it employed 391 people, 331 of them underground. By 1933 the registered office was at Oakerthorpe, and the manager G. W. Dickinson ran it by electric power on the Kilburn seam, selling gas and household coal. It employed 450 in 1933 and 1940.
At nationalisation in 1947 it passed to the National Coal Board with 446 men and an output of 120,000 tons. Plans of part of the Kilburn workings were deposited as abandoned in January 1950. In November 1963 the colliery was merged with Swanwick, which itself closed in 1968.
