Mines in Derbyshire

Derbyshire's Peak District has been mined for lead since Roman times, its veins worked by generations of small, independent miners operating under an ancient system of Barmote Courts, which still meet today to regulate mineral rights — as recently as 2013, Wirksworth's Great Barmote Court was called on to rule on a real dispute over who had rights to a seam of lead near Castleton. Rivalry between neighbouring mines could turn deadly: in 1833, three miners from the neighbouring Maypitt mine died after Magpie Mine's workers lit a fire underground to drive them out during a dispute over the Great Redsoil vein, a case that ended in acquittal despite the deaths.
