Overview
The National Coal Board's first undersea coal mine, sunk at Kirkcaldy to work reserves beneath the Firth of Forth, struck by a fatal 1973 roof fall and later by two serious fires before closing in 1988 with more than 200 million tonnes of coal still unworked.
History
The National Coal Board began sinking Seafield Colliery at Kirkcaldy on 12 May 1954, its first undersea coal mine, planned as one of five new 'superpits'; the difficult geology beneath the Firth of Forth, combined with a persistent risk of spontaneous combustion, meant production did not begin until 1965-66, over a decade after sinking started. At its peak, in 1970, the colliery employed 2,466 people; among its workforce in later years was Jocky Wilson, who worked at Seafield before becoming a world darts champion. On 10 May 1973, a roof fall in the D22 face, a steep seam running out under the Firth of Forth, killed five men (see Disasters, below). The colliery continued working afterward but suffered further serious setbacks: its main coal-producing face was lost to fire during the 1984-85 miners' strike, and a £3.5 million replacement face was itself destroyed by fire in 1987. Despite an estimated 200 million tonnes of high-calorific, low-sulphur coal remaining unworked beneath the Forth, British Coal announced Seafield's closure in January 1988, citing low production and £11 million in losses; the closure cost 640 jobs in an area where male unemployment already exceeded 20 per cent.
Geology
Seafield's reserves lay beneath the Firth of Forth, reached from a shaft sunk on the Kirkcaldy shore; the undersea geology proved difficult to work, and the colliery faced a persistent risk of spontaneous combustion throughout its life, contributing to two major fires in the 1980s.
Workings
As the National Coal Board's first undersea colliery, Seafield's steep, undersea seams — including the D22 face, the site of the 1973 disaster — presented conditions different enough from conventional pits that support systems designed for shallower dips proved inadequate, a failing identified directly in the 1973 inquiry.

The colliery's twin winding towers were demolished by explosives in September 1989 — the 144-foot tower on 10 September, the larger 203-foot, 3,700-tonne tower a week later on 17 September. The site has since been built over and is now a housing estate.
