Overview

A Mold colliery opened about 1873 as Bedford Pits, reformed under a new company in 1879, which came through a thirteen-week strike in 1889 and closed in 1893 after only twenty years.

History

Bailey Hill Colliery, at Mold, was opened around 1873 under the name of Bedford Pits Colliery. Its company went into liquidation in 1879 and was reformed as the Bailey Hill Coal Company, and the colliery was owned from Lancashire. Its site shows as an area of tips some 100 to 120 metres across with two shafts on the north-east side, and air photographs show traces of a spur line running north to the railway.

In March 1889 a tramp was sent to gaol for sleeping on the colliery's boilers in the small hours of a Sunday, and in September the Mold local board resolved to call on the manager of the Bailey Hill Colliery Company Limited about the deposit the colliery let into the brook, after a complaint on behalf of the owner of the neighbouring land. Late that year the men struck, and the strike ran for thirteen weeks before it was settled at the turn of 1890 with all the strikers taken back. The colliery closed in 1893.
