Overview
A short-lived Teesdale colliery near Winston station, sunk by the Newsham Collieries Company about 1910, which employed 87 at its peak and was abandoned in August 1914; its miners' cottages at South Cleatlam remain.
History
Westholme Colliery lay near Winston station in Teesdale, about eleven miles north-north-west of Richmond. The Newsham Collieries Company Ltd was sinking it in 1910, with 21 men, 20 of them underground, to work a coal in the Yoredale beds.
It employed 87 miners at its peak, around the beginning of the First World War, and miners' cottages were built for it in the hamlet of South Cleatlam, which still stand as homes. The colliery was short-lived: its Yoredale seam was abandoned on 22 August 1914. One death is recorded there.
After it closed, efforts turned to two new collieries nearby, Teesside and North Tees.
