Overview
A small Yoredale-coal colliery near Winston in Teesdale, worked from the 1920s and by the National Coal Board with about 60 men until January 1966.
History
North Tees Colliery lay near Winston, in Teesdale, about ten miles north-north-west of Richmond. After Westholme Colliery at Winston closed in 1914, efforts turned to two new collieries, Teesside and North Tees.
The North Tees Colliery Company worked it in the 1920s with eight men in a Yoredale coal, abandoned on 16 February 1927. J. W. Johnson had it in the 1940s, with 24 men in 1945. On 21 October 1941 two men from Staindrop were overcome by foul air and died.
The National Coal Board took it over in 1947 and worked the Winston Main seam, then again the Yoredale, employing 49 in 1955 and 60 in 1965, raising steam and household coal. It closed in January 1966.
