Overview

A small 1930s colliery at Bayldon near Haltwhistle, worked by the Melkridge Coal Company in the Little Limestone coal and discontinued by 1938.

History

Bayldon Colliery lay at Bayldon, near Haltwhistle, in the parishes of Melkridge and Henshaw on the north side of the South Tyne valley. In the 1930s it belonged to the Melkridge Coal Company Ltd, which also worked Melkridge Colliery and the Ramshaw Drift.

It worked the Little Limestone coal for household and steam coal. The returns show it small and short-lived: 12 people employed in 1935, eight of them below ground, and 27 in 1936, 21 below ground. By 1938 it was discontinued, with no one employed. The plan of its Little Limestone workings was recorded as abandoned on 30 January 1942 and is held under the Mining Record Office reference F.17.
