Overview
A house-coal level at Miskin, Mountain Ash, opened by Nixon's Navigation Coal Company in 1885 in the No. 3 Rhondda seam and closed in December 1925.
History
Glyngwyn was a level at Miskin, near Mountain Ash, opened in 1885 by Nixon's Navigation Coal Company to work the No. 3 Rhondda seam for house coal, alongside the company's steam-coal pits at Mountain Ash. It raised 17,373 tons in 1889.
In 1896 it employed 117 men, all but five underground, under James Davies. The workforce passed 200 in the early 1900s: 226 in 1908 under F. W. Ball, 258 in 1913 under A. A. Jenkins, and 308 in 1915 and 1916 under A. H. Williams. The No. 3 Rhondda Rider was abandoned in July 1915.
The returns of the 1920s are uneven: NMRS has the level missing from the lists until 1921 and only nine men in 1923, against 312 in Welsh Coal Mines for the same year and 264 in 1924 and 1925. It closed in December 1925, when the No. 3 Rhondda was abandoned.
