Mines in Devon

Devon's mining history spans tin streaming on Dartmoor since medieval times, silver that helped fund royal wars from the mines around Bere Alston and Combe Martin, and, in the 19th century, one of the largest copper mines in the world at Devon Great Consols. Devon shared Cornwall's stannary system of self-governing tin districts, with Tavistock among its historic stannary towns. Mining here wasn't limited to metal, either: Beer, on the coast, has been quarried continuously for building stone since Roman times, making it one of Britain's oldest working industrial sites of any kind.
