Mines in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester's Astley Green Colliery was the last deep mine sunk in the wider Manchester coalfield, and its surviving headgear and winding engine — the only such pairing left standing anywhere on the Lancashire coalfield — were saved from demolition as a working memorial to the industry.
