Mines in West Lothian

West Lothian was the historic heart of Scotland's shale oil industry, and Pumpherston Oil Works, established in 1883-84 as a purpose-built industrial settlement, gave its name to the Pumpherston retort, the standard design used across much of the trade James 'Paraffin' Young had founded.
