North Lanarkshire sat at the heart of the Lanarkshire coalfield, the industry that fed the iron and steel works of Coatbridge and Motherwell and made this one of the most heavily mined landscapes in Britain. Almost nothing of it stands today — the pits closed, the bings were levelled and the ground was built over — so the county's mining is remembered less through surviving structures than through memorials, above all the one at Moodiesburn to the 47 men killed at Auchengeich in 1959.
