Mines in Staffordshire

Staffordshire's mining history splits between the ancient copper workings of Ecton Hill in the Manifold Valley — one of only two confirmed Bronze Age copper mines in England, and Britain's deepest mine by the 18th century — and the coalfields of the Potteries, where Chatterley Whitfield grew into one of the most complete surviving deep collieries in Europe before its closure.
