A hard, dull-black coal rich in spores and algal matter, which burns with a bright smoky flame and can be cut and polished. It was valued for gas making and for candle-like illumination — the name is thought to come from "candle coal" — and was worked as a seam in its own right in Lancashire, Scotland and North Wales.
