Sinkers at Manvers Main Colliery, near Rotherham, went back down on 14 December 1869 to drill out a shot that had missed fire, against the rules and under their master sinker; it exploded and killed two.

A hook coupling three tubs of men to the haulage rope at Wyken Colliery, near Coventry, broke on 16 September 1889; the train ran away down an 800-yard incline and was wrecked, killing three of the seven riders.

A heavy fall of roof in the new Coronation Drift at Tower Colliery, Hirwaun, on 16 June 1913 killed three hard heading men the day before the drift was to send out its first coal.
