The explosion came at about two on the Wednesday afternoon in the Hey's Craig shale pit. Five men were badly burned: the oversman Francis Danks, the fireman John Neil and three miners. The inspector recorded that Danks and Neil had gone without thought, carrying naked lights, into a place they knew was unventilated, and that all four of the dead lived more than a week and could explain what had happened.
