Mines in South Lanarkshire
South Lanarkshire's Leadhills, high in the Lowther Hills, was worked for lead from at least the 13th century and nicknamed 'God's Treasure House' for the richness of its veins. The surrounding streams have also been panned for gold for over 500 years — gold from here is said to have gone into the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish Crown Jewels, around 1540 — and it remains one of the few places in Britain where anyone can legally pan for real gold. The region's coalfield around Blantyre was also the site of Scotland's worst-ever mining disaster, a firedamp explosion that killed 207 men and boys in 1877.
