Overview
Glasdir, a modest copper mine near Dolgellau, became the site of a genuine world first in 1897: the Elmore brothers' oil-flotation process, installed there at full industrial scale, was the world's first successful commercial method for separating fine sulphide ore from waste rock — the ancestor of the froth-flotation technique still used in mineral processing worldwide today.
History
Glasdir was first worked as an opencast operation from around 1852, developing over the following decades into an underground mine worked chiefly for copper, though it lay within the wider Dolgellau gold belt and also yielded gold and silver as byproducts. In 1896 the mine was bought by the Elmore family — William Elmore and his sons Francis (Frank) and Alexander Stanley — who used it to develop and demonstrate their new method of separating fine, powdery sulphide ore from waste using oil rather than water alone. Installed at Glasdir in 1897 and patented in 1898 (revised in 1901), the Elmore oil-flotation process agglomerated the pulverised copper sulphides into oil-coated balls that floated to the surface for skimming, recovering material that older gravity-based methods lost as waste. It was the world's first industrial-scale commercial flotation plant, and its success at Glasdir directly influenced the froth-flotation processes that transformed mineral processing worldwide over the following decades. Between 1872 and 1913 the mine produced around 13,077 tons of dressed copper ore, with a final flourish of 8,275 ounces of silver in 1913-14 and 735 ounces of gold in 1914 recovered as the flotation process squeezed extra value from the ore. Glasdir closed in 1915, its operations ended prematurely by wartime conditions.
Geology
The mine worked copper sulphide mineralisation, with associated gold and silver, hosted within the Cambrian rocks of the Dolgellau gold belt — the same mineralised district, though a different style of deposit, that produced the district's more famous gold mines at Clogau and Gwynfynydd.

Workings
Ore was worked from underground development beneath the site of the original opencast workings; the Elmore family's oil-flotation plant, installed in 1897 and later supplemented with equipment transferred from their failed Sygun copper mine in 1907, processed the mine's fine sulphide ore at what was then unprecedented industrial scale.
Closure
The mine closed in 1915, its operations brought to a premature end by wartime conditions.
What remains
Parts of the flotation plant and the stepped remains of the processing mill survive, preserved within what is now Coed y Brenin Forest Park, managed by Natural Resources Wales.
The terraced remains of the ore-processing mill survive on the hillside, along with sections of the pioneering flotation plant.
