Bridgend's mineral is limestone, and a great deal of it. The Carboniferous limestone outcropping west of the town is unusually pure, and it has been burnt and crushed for the ironworks and steelworks of South Wales since the Industrial Revolution — first for the furnaces at Cefn Cribwr and Maesteg, and today for Port Talbot.
