Burgham Mine

Overview

A lead mine in the Stiperstones orefield of south-west Shropshire, one of twelve sites covered by the Shropshire Mines Trust's own field guide to the district, though no surviving account of its individual working history has yet been located.

History

Burgham Mine -- also recorded elsewhere as Burgam or Burgum Mine -- worked a vein within the Stiperstones lead-mining district, where mineralisation runs through the steeply-dipping Mytton Flags above the Stiperstones Quartzite, a district mined on and off from Roman times to the 1950s. A genuine search of the specialist bodies that document this orefield -- the Northern Mine Research Society, the Shropshire Mines Trust and the Shropshire Caving & Mining Club -- found no operator, working dates or output specific to Burgham itself; it is documented today only as one of the twelve sites in the Trust's field guide, and as a recorded mineral locality.
