Mines in Blaenau Gwent

Blaenau Gwent is the head of the Ebbw valleys, steep-sided coal country that grew almost entirely on steam coal and emptied almost as fast when the pits went. Its collieries are all gone, and what the county is best known for now is a 20-metre figure of a miner standing above Abertillery — the Guardian, raised over the site of Six Bells for the 45 men killed there in 1960.
