Mines in Torfaen

Torfaen sits within the South Wales Coalfield, and its mining history is inseparable from Blaenavon, whose ironworks and collieries — including Big Pit, now the National Coal Museum — made the town one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution in Wales. The Blaenavon Industrial Landscape was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for the completeness of its surviving ironworks, tramroads and mine workings.
