Overview
A 75-foot-deep open scar in the sandstone at Engine Vein marks four millennia of mining -- from Bronze Age stone hammers to a Roman coin hoard hidden in a shaft, and finally a 20th-century capping built to keep out reckless explorers.
History
Engine Vein is perhaps the oldest mined site at Alderley Edge, with finds of Bronze Age stone hammers recovered from its workings; Roman coins found in a shaft now known as Pot Shaft, confirmed by archaeological excavation, showed the shaft itself had been dug in the 1st century AD. The workings visible today, though, most likely date from the activities of Charles Roe between 1755 and 1771, and from a company of Stockport men working between 1804 and 1810; the mineralised sandstone on the vein's southern side was then extensively mined by the Alderley Edge Mining Company between 1860 and 1877, with possible further reworking by other operators in 1911 and 1919. Unlike the more dispersed workings of West and Wood Mines, Engine Vein's earlier mining followed the fault itself directly rather than scattered ore pockets; the Alderley Edge Mining Company later connected the mine to its wider works via two ore chutes and the mile-long Hough Level tunnel. The open-cast working of the Engine Vein fault left a large, deep scar -- some 75 feet at its deepest point -- that, like the complex's other mines, drew in unauthorised 20th-century explorers and, with them, the accidents that followed. The opencast was capped in 1981 at a depth of about 25 feet specifically to prevent inexperienced visitors from gaining entry to the mine that way; a proper entrance was instead made into the mine at the side of the opencast, with access now strictly controlled. The mine today is reached via an adit dug open by the Derbyshire Caving Club in that same year, 1981. Underground, walking passage leads from the entrance to a main passage that includes a chamber once open to the air, now capped with a concrete slab, where the vein itself is visible in the roof; a steep descent leads to an ore chute connecting to the Hough Level. The mine also gives access to Bear Pit and the inclined Blue Shaft, both leading down to the Hough Level, and to small coffin levels and a run-in from the surface near its far end. Most of Engine Vein was worked either directly along the fault -- spanning the Bronze Age to the 18th century -- or to the south of the fault, in 19th-century workings.
