The Darlington firm that undertook the sinking of Thorne Colliery from about 1909, forecasting 6,000 tons a day for an outlay of £500,000 over ten years. The sinking in fact took seventeen years against continuous water, and the company switched from ground freezing to the cementation process when work resumed after the First World War.
