Imperial Chemical Industries was formed in 1926 by the merger of Britain's four largest chemical companies and grew into one of the world's biggest chemical manufacturers, active in explosives, fertilisers, salt and heavy chemicals. Its salt division came to hold the Stoke Prior works, which it closed in 1972 as part of a wider rationalisation.
