History

Frizington, alongside neighbouring Cleator Moor and Egremont, was one of the three main centres of the West Cumbrian haematite orefield, a narrow belt of iron-bearing Carboniferous limestone running between Lamplugh and Calder Bridge. Originally a scattered collection of farms and houses, Frizington was transformed into a unified boom town as mine-heads sprang up across the parish through the 19th century; its ore, rich and low in phosphorus and sulphur, was valued highly enough to be nicknamed 'the Rolls Royce of ores'. The immediate area held a dense cluster of separately named workings, among them Parkside Mine and Mowbray Mine — the latter one of the district's best-known sources of fine mineral specimens, including haematite, baryte and fluorite. One specific working, known as Frizington Mine (or Frizington No.1 Mine, also referred to as Frizington Parks Mine, Pit No.1), was worked for iron ore from 1865 to 1880, passing through the hands of Musgrave & Co (1865-70), then Gibson, Cook & Musgrave (from 1875), and finally the Frizington Coal Co (from 1880); researchers have noted some genuine uncertainty over whether 'Frizington Mine' was ever a single, formally distinct working, or a name loosely applied by the Frizington Mining Company and Frizington Coal Company to whichever workings they held at the time. A railway branch to Frizington opened to passengers on 1 July 1857, part of the network of lines built to move ore from the district's mines; the village's own church, St Paul's, was built in 1867-68, near the likely peak of the local mining boom. Mining across the wider West Cumbrian orefield reached its 19th-century peak before contracting through the 20th century, with large-scale extraction finally ending in the district by the late 1970s.

Geology

Part of the West Cumbrian haematite orefield, a belt of Carboniferous limestone between Lamplugh and Calder Bridge in which iron-rich hydrothermal fluids replaced the limestone on a large scale, producing haematite ore including the fibrous 'kidney ore' variety the district is known for.
