East Lothian's coal was worked along a narrow coastal strip west of Musselburgh, and it was worked early: the monks of Newbattle Abbey were digging at Prestongrange in the 12th century, in what is the first written record of a colliery anywhere in Scotland. The same shoreline carried harbours, glassworks, potteries and brickworks, so the industrial archaeology here is unusually layered for so small an area.
