Leased 5,000 acres of coal reserves at Duckmanton in 1882 and developed Markham Colliery, operating it until the 1947 nationalisation of the coal industry; acquired mineral rights around Edlington in 1907 and sank Yorkshire Main Colliery, operated under the dedicated Yorkshire Main Colliery Ltd until 1937.
