Overview
A brief but intense Victorian iron rush on the greensand ridge at Seend, where the antiquarian John Aubrey had already praised the ore's richness in 1666: three 50ft blast furnaces were built here from 1860 before high extraction and transport costs closed them within thirty years, leaving a quarry now protected as one of only two known Lower Cretaceous ironstone sites in Britain.
History
Iron ore had been recognised at Seend since at least 1666, when the antiquarian John Aubrey examined it and reportedly called it the richest ore he had ever seen, but the deposit went unworked commercially for nearly two centuries — the woodland that would have provided the charcoal to smelt it had already been cleared by around 1634. It took the arrival of mineral coal, brought within reach by the Kennet and Avon Canal (completed through Seend in 1810) and later the Great Western Railway, to make the ore worth working. William Sarl took out mining leases from November 1856 and, on the strength of coal bought in from the Old Grove colliery, lit Seend's first blast furnace in January 1860. By 1868 the works had grown to three furnaces, each 50ft high, with four hot-air ovens, a beam engine and boilers, employing around 300 men and producing, from the two furnaces then in blast, some 150 tons of pig iron a week between them. The operation's early success led to the formation of the Wiltshire Iron Company in June 1861 to raise further capital. Ore was hauled by tramway to the Kennet and Avon Canal, shipped by barge to Bristol, and from there by small sailing craft across the Bristol Channel to South Wales; a broad-gauge railway later took pig iron directly onto the Great Western main line, and Seend's own railway station was deliberately sited near the quarry rather than the village because of the sheer volume of mineral traffic it generated. Despite the quality of the ore, the business struggled with the underlying economics of extraction and transport, worsened by mismanagement, and iron smelting at Seend became increasingly intermittent through the 1870s before stopping for good by the mid-decade; the furnaces themselves were dismantled by 1889-90. Quarrying the ironstone continued on a reduced basis for decades afterward, the ore now shipped elsewhere for smelting, into the years after the First World War. From around the 1920s what ore was still worked was calcined on site rather than smelted, its iron oxide used to absorb impurities in gas-purification plants treating town gas, a use that kept the quarry intermittently active into the mid-20th century.
Geology
Seend's ore is limonite — brown, hydrated iron oxide — occurring within the Lower Greensand of Lower Cretaceous age, a formation that also preserves a locally rich and distinctive fossil fauna. The deposit is recognised as one of only two known Lower Cretaceous ironstone occurrences anywhere in Britain, the other being the Claxby Ironstone of Lincolnshire — a genuine geological rarity rather than simply a locally useful ore body, which is what earns the site its SSSI status alongside its industrial history.
Workings
Ore was worked by open quarrying along the greensand ridge rather than by underground mining, with a purpose-built tramway carrying it down to the Kennet and Avon Canal in the works' earliest years and, later, direct rail sidings serving the quarry.
Closure
Iron smelting at Seend ended by the mid-1870s and the blast furnaces were dismantled by 1889-90; ironstone quarrying continued on a much smaller scale, latterly for calcining rather than smelting, into the mid-20th century.
What remains
Seend Ironstone Quarry and Road Cutting was notified as a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1965, covering around 3 acres, protecting the exposed Lower Greensand and its ore-bearing fauna. Ferrun Towers, the former ironmaster's house, survives in the village alongside traces of the old tramway and quarry workings.
