Cause
An explosion caused by a blower of gas in a shaft that was being sunk, with fourteen men in the shaft at the time.
What happened
William Ramsay, aged 16, and James Murphy, aged 36, both sinkers, were killed and five other men injured when a blower of gas exploded in the shaft that was being sunk; fourteen men were in the shaft at the time. Tylorstown, in the Rhondda Fach, was among the deepest pits of the coalfield, its shafts reaching the Gellideg seam at over six hundred yards.
