Houghton Main Colliery explosion, 1975

An explosion in the Meltonfield seam at Houghton Main Colliery on 12 June 1975 killed five men after firedamp, which had accumulated in an unventilated heading for nine days, was ignited by frictional sparking from an auxiliary fan; a major public inquiry followed.

Cause

The official inquiry, led by H.M. Chief Inspector of Mines J. Carver, found that firedamp had accumulated in the B50's return development heading, which had remained unventilated for nine days, and concluded the most likely source of ignition was frictional sparking from the impeller and casing of the Carter Howden auxiliary fan installed there.
