Desford Colliery Band

A Leicestershire brass band founded in 1898 that took the name of Desford Colliery in 1956, when most of its players were miners and the coal industry's welfare fund bought it new instruments; European, World and five-time National champions, and still playing from a clubhouse in Coalville.

The mining history in this record

The band was founded in 1898. In 1912 it engaged its first professional musical director, Albert Lawson, who made the twice-weekly journey to rehearsals in Leicester by horse and trap. It flourished until 1914, when its players went to the trenches, regrouped after the war to win a run of gold medals and become the leading band in the Midlands, and stopped again for the Second World War.

The colliery connection dates from the rebuilding after that war. The reformed band badly needed to replace worn-out instruments, and in 1956 was helped by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation; because of that, and because most of its players were by then miners, it was renamed the Desford Colliery Band. The name has been shared with sponsors ever since — the band has played as Desford Colliery Welfare, Desford Colliery Miners', Desford Colliery Dowty, Desford Colliery Caterpillar and Desford Colliery (Aggregate Industries), the Dowty years named for the mining-equipment maker that backed it.

Legacy today

Desford has won the National Championship of Great Britain five times (1987, 1988, 1989, 1991 and 2025), the European Championship in 1986, the World Music Contest in 1997 and the International Masters in 2008, along with eighteen Midlands regional titles between 1976 and 2024 and five Butlins Mineworkers championships. Its home is the Brass House, a purpose-built clubhouse in Coalville, and it has toured from Moscow to Chicago, Singapore and Bangkok. A fly-on-the-wall television series, The Real Brassed Off, followed the running of the band. The colliery that gave it its name is long closed; the band is Championship Section and current National champion.
