A small, personal filter breathing device carried on the belt of every underground worker, designed to give at least an hour's protection against carbon monoxide poisoning while escaping a fire or explosion.
Historical usage
Self-rescuers were introduced to British coal mining following asphyxiation deaths in the Whitehaven (William Pit, 1947) and Creswell (1950) disasters, after which the Chief Inspector of Mines pressed for a personal device to protect miners from lethal carbon monoxide during escape. Early trials from 1953 proved unreliable and were abandoned; renewed development eventually produced a workable design by 1967, and by the 1970s every miner working underground in Britain was required to carry one throughout their shift.
How it worked
The device is stored in a small, robust metal case worn on the belt and opened only in an emergency. A filter-type self-rescuer works catalytically, converting carbon monoxide into the far less harmful carbon dioxide as the wearer breathes through it, giving roughly an hour's protection — enough, in principle, to escape to fresh air.
Why it was used
Earlier disasters had shown that miners could survive an initial explosion or fire only to be killed afterwards by carbon monoxide during their own escape; requiring every miner to carry a personal device at all times closed that specific gap directly, rather than relying solely on rescue teams reaching survivors in time.
Risks & limitations
A filter self-rescuer protects specifically against carbon monoxide, not against oxygen deficiency or other toxic gases, and its protection is time-limited — it is an aid to escape, not a substitute for full breathing apparatus or rescue.
