An extremely hard silicified sandstone -- the eroded remnant of a once near-continuous desert crust -- found as scattered boulders across southern England.

Historical usage

Sarsens formed when a cap of silcrete, built up across much of southern England under arid conditions in the Cenozoic, was broken into scattered blocks by later glacial action. Around Buckinghamshire's Naphill Common and Denner Hill they were quarried locally as 'Denner Hill Stone', prized for its exceptional hardness and used throughout the county and beyond for paving and, less often, in buildings; elsewhere in southern England the same material forms the great sarsens of Stonehenge and Avebury, and smaller stones were traditionally pressed into service as boundary markers. Traditional quarrying broke the stone using fire, and in later periods explosives, to reduce large blocks to a workable size.

Value over time

Sarsen's value came entirely from its hardness rather than any rarity of the material itself -- as a hard-wearing paving stone it commanded a premium over softer local stone for setts and kerbs, since it resisted wear far better under heavy cart and, later, vehicle traffic. That same hardness made it laborious and costly to work, and cheaper alternatives (imported granite setts, and later concrete) displaced it as those became more widely available through the 20th century.

Hazards & challenges

No hazard specific to sarsen itself is well documented; as with any hard-rock quarrying, the generic risk is airborne silica dust and the resulting risk of silicosis, worsened here by the unusual physical effort needed to break so hard a stone by hand.
