Buckinghamshire's extractive history is chalk: the Chiltern escarpment gave the county some of the best cement-making chalk and marl in the country, worked in vast quarries around Pitstone through the middle of the 20th century. There was no metal and little coal here — the mineral wealth was the hill itself.
