Overview
Chiltern sarsen-stone quarries around Hughenden and Bradenham whose exceptionally hard 'Denner Hill stone' paved streets from Windsor Castle to Aylesbury and High Wycombe, dug out by workers probing the clay with long skewers to find it.
History
Denner Hill stone — a particularly hard local variety of sarsen, the dense silcrete boulders scattered across the Chiltern Hills after the breakup of a once near-continuous desert crust — takes its name from an area of Hughenden parish, Buckinghamshire, where substantial deposits of Plateau Drift and Clay-with-Flints cover the wooded hills. Sarsen pits on Denner Hill itself were worked until just before the First World War, and the trade must already have been established much earlier for the locality's name to have become attached to the stone. Dressed Denner Hill sarsen was used in local construction from at least the start of the 19th century — in Wyatt's remodelling of Wycombe Abbey around 1803-04, in an extension to Denner Hill Farmhouse itself around 1800 and its barns of 1803-04, and in Marlow Town Hall of 1806 — with local stone-cutters such as Thomas Watts of Chipping Wycombe recorded leasing quarrying rights as early as 1736 and 1740. Between 1895 and 1920, under the reporting regime introduced by the Quarries Act 1894, an average of 22 quarries were worked across Buckinghamshire each year, employing around 112 people between them and raising an average of 420 tons of sandstone a year — almost all of it sarsen, as the Home Office Mines Inspectorate specifically noted for 1905-07. Quarrymen prospected for buried boulders by probing the ground with metal rods called 'snipers'; once a boulder was located it was hand-excavated, producing steep-sided, irregularly lobed pits, with simple scaffolding, sheer-legs and windlasses used to lower workers in and raise stone out. Boulders were first split in situ with flat wedges, then further divided into blocks above ground, before a final stage produced setts, kerbstones and building blocks, some dressed to a finer finish. The stone reached Aylesbury and High Wycombe as street paving and kerbs, and Aylesbury's Market Square today holds the largest surviving concentration of Denner Hill setts, gutters and kerbs in a public open space anywhere in the county. Quarrying was largely finished by the Second World War; the trade's last recorded stonemason was still working as late as 1950.

Denner Hill stone is a local variety of sarsen: an extremely hard silcrete, the cemented remains of a once near-continuous sandy crust broken up and scattered as boulders across the Chiltern Hills, buried within the area's Plateau Drift and Clay-with-Flints deposits around Hughenden parish.
