North Ayrshire's coal was worked from the Stevenston and Saltcoats shore, and worked early: a Newcomen engine was pumping here in 1719, only seven years after the first one anywhere, and the estate that owned it built its own harbour and canal to get the coal out to Ireland. The ruined engine house still stands on what is now a golf course.
