MineArchiveShotts Iron Company
Founded in 1801 by Robert and Hugh Baird and partners on a mineral lease at Shotts; reconstituted in 1824 as the Shotts Iron Joint Stock Company, it grew into a major Lanarkshire ironworks famous for decorative castings, with collieries across Lanarkshire and the Lothians: it held Ramsay Colliery at Loanhead from 1865 and owned Mauricewood, where 63 men and boys died in the fire of 1889. The ironworks closed in 1951.
