Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron and Coal Company

The dominant ironmaking concern of the Monmouthshire valleys, formed in 1868 out of the older Ebbw Vale ironworks and by the early 20th century one of the largest integrated steelmakers in Britain. Like its rivals it bought into English ore fields to secure its own supply, and Irthlingborough was its Northamptonshire source — quarried from 1915 and then mined underground from 1918, the ore going by rail to the furnaces in South Wales. The company was absorbed into Richard Thomas and Company in 1935 and nationalised with the rest of the industry after the war.
