Open questions: Warwickshire
Where sources disagree, MineArchive keeps both accounts rather than picking one; where a fact could not be settled, the record says so. 11 such claims on 8 records. All regions.
Alvecote Colliery
- No magistrates' cases are recorded against Alvecote mineworkers, unlike the pits around Nuneaton and Bedworth; the colliery's men are thought either to have been more loosely disciplined or to have refused to join the Warwickshire Miners' Association, and they worked through the 1912 strike. (uncertain)
Ansley Hall Colliery
- Our Warwickshire’s article on this colliery has it scheduled for phased closure in 1959; its article on Haunchwood says Ansley Hall closed for production in 1964, when two of its underground districts were assigned to Haunchwood. (disputed)
Arley Colliery
- The Arley Colliery Company was formed after coal was found in the valley west of the village -- in 1901 according to Our Warwickshire, in 1902 according to the Victoria County History, which credits its founding to George Fowler of Basford Hall. (disputed)
Birch Coppice Colliery
- Birch Coppice Colliery closed in 1987. (disputed)
Craven Colliery
- The original shaft is said to have been sunk in the eighteenth century and a new shaft in the twentieth. (uncertain)
Exhall Colliery
- The BGS mine-plans catalogue holds a Mining Remediation Authority abandonment plan titled 'Exhall' (catalogue 12452, Seven Feet, dated 1938); the catalogue gives no location and the plan's details do not clearly tie it to this working, so it may belong to another of the same name. (uncertain)
Haunchwood Colliery
- The sinking date of Tunnel Colliery is given variously as 1891 by Keith Turton, 1892 by Our Warwickshire and 1894 by Warwickshire Railways. By 1895 it employed 817 men underground. (disputed)
- The original Nowell’s pit is recorded as closing in 1914 by one contributor to Warwickshire Railways and as ceasing coal winding on 7 July 1925 by another on the same page; both agree that submersible pumps were then fitted in its shafts to keep the Tunnel Pit’s seams free of water. (disputed)
- Tunnel Colliery closed on 25 March 1967 according to Warwickshire Railways and Our Warwickshire; Keith Turton, on the same Warwickshire Railways page, gives 1970. (disputed)
Nuneaton Colliery
- Nuneaton Colliery closed in 1920. (disputed)
- Stanley's Pit, the Nuneaton (New) Colliery, closed in 1922. (disputed)
