Overview

A small underground ironstone mine near Charlbury, unusual among Oxfordshire's ironstone workings for being driven through galleries beneath a road rather than simply quarried at outcrop, feeding local brickworks and lime-burning as much as the iron trade itself.

History

Ironstone — geologically the Marlstone Rock Formation — was first recognised as a workable iron ore at Fawler, a hamlet in Charlbury parish on the River Evenlode, by the British Geological Survey in the 1850s, and working began around 1859. Early operations were surface workings tried by a succession of different owners, hampered by the depth of overburden that had to be stripped before the ore itself could be reached. A tunnel was later driven under the road to reach the railway sidings, and from that tunnel attempts were made to mine the ore properly underground, in galleries rather than open pits — a departure from how most of the district's ironstone was worked. A geologist's journal from 1886 records testimony from a pony driver at the mine, Fred Oliver, that 'a large amount had been got' by that date. An 1884 Ordnance Survey map already marks the site as a 'disused iron mine', though brick clay and lime-burning stone continued to be worked there alongside, or after, the ironstone itself. The site's railway sidings were later used by the North Oxfordshire Ironstone Company as reception sidings, evidenced by a 1964 photograph of the company's locomotive there — though whether this reflects renewed extraction at Fawler itself that late, or simply continued use of its rail connection for the wider regional ironstone trade, was not established from the sources checked for this pass.

Geology

Fawler's ore is the Marlstone Rock Formation, an Early Jurassic bed of sandy, shell-fragmental and ooidal ferruginous limestone interbedded with ferruginous sandstone and mudstone — the same ironstone-bearing formation worked at outcrop across much of the Banbury and Oxfordshire ironstone field, though at Fawler it was reached by tunnel and gallery rather than open quarrying.

Workings

Worked first as a series of surface pits, then via a tunnel driven beneath the road to the railway sidings, from which galleries were driven to follow the ore underground.

Closure

Already marked 'disused' on the 1884 Ordnance Survey map, some 25 years after working began; brick clay and lime-burning stone continued to be worked at the site into the later 19th century.
