Mines in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire's defining historic quarry is Headington, worked from 1396 to build New College's bell-tower and, over the following five centuries, much of Oxford itself — Christ Church, the Radcliffe Camera, and buildings as far away as Eton College and Windsor Castle. Nine Oxford colleges owned their own pits there by the 1550s, and the last of them, Magdalen Quarry, kept working until 1949; several former pits, including Rock Edge and Magdalen Quarry itself, survive today as nature reserves prized for their exposed Jurassic coral-reef fossils.
